I have a 60 gallon tank and was thinking of getting a protein skimmer that was rated for 79-132 gallons... would it be a problem that it is rated for 20 gallons more than my tank volume or would it still work the same?

That is a good idea to get it just above what your system is rated at. Just make sure you get a good quality skimmer. They aren't all made equally. If I had a nickle for everyone that gets upset that a seaclone or some other junk model doesn't work and paid the same price as you would for a reef octopus or eshopps...I could get a new skimmer.
