Protien skimmer and trickle filter

Hello currently I am cycling my tank. Right now I have a trickle filter that is rated for 110 gallons but my tank is only 40 gallons. The guy at the store said this would give me lots of current. I am now planning to add a protein skimmer. However the guy at the store said that adding a protein skimmer and a trickle filter together is bad. He says the sponge in the trickle filter prevents the protein skimmer from working. Is this true?

I kind of disagree with him. Even though I see his point the filter media is not going to catch everything esp. the excessive nutrients. I had both on my tank for seven yrs and the skimmer still caught alot of gunk. I say go for it.

+1. Add the skimmer. If you can convert the wet/dry to a sump.
