Quarantine Tank Water

Do you guys use new water for the tank, or take water from the main tank. Ive had a sponge soaking in my sump for a while, and i know to put that in my back filter, but what about water?

I have heard it is ok to use tank water for this. What I did was to use about 50% tank water and 50% fresh. Good luck,
