Okay, after taking a look at numerous LFS's stands, I realize that my stand is a POS. The board that is supporting the tank's bottom is extremely thin...probably 1/5 of an inch.

At one of the LFS I found this extremely nice looking stand but the problem here is that my tank is 36''15''20'' and the stand is 36''18''. So after taking a look at the stand I was about to purchase it but that 3in worries me. The stand itself is bulit like an ox. I know for sure that the stand he had is probably 100x stronger than the one I have now, but 3''!!!

The peice of wood that is meant to support the tank's weight is pretty thick and looking inside the doors, there is additional support on the back (which I don't see if any other 36'' stand). There is also additional support on every corning of the stand because it is not just 4 peices of wood put together like my stand. This stand has 4 peices of wood together plus additional wooden stabs at every corner.

What do you guys think?

Would that be okay? To have the tank placed 3/2in from the front and 3/2 from the back? Would it be just empty wasted space or is there going to be some structural problems?

the impotrant thing about the stand is if the outside dimension of the tank is the same as the legs of the stand. The top of the stand only carries weight if the bottom of the tank is not directly over the sides of the stand. What is the material of the existing stand? If it is particle board, and getting older I would look into making one

I think what they have done is build the extra 3" as a stand off from the wall. They do that around here alot. Actually wished I'd done it with mine. You know you can build your own stand for littel of nothing, Garf.org had a diy section that you put in your dim. and it gives you the cut wood sizes. Then you can sheet it with whatever you like.

My current stand has 1/2 in wood all around at all 4 sides but the peice that holds the weight of the stand is a particle board that is extremely thin. http://home.earthlink.net/~luntiz/misc/stand1.jpg

the top of the stand which holds the tank is very very thin, I'm afraid that the tank could either bow (which I think already happened) or the tank could fall right through if the board were to snap (which wouldn't take much).
