I was going to do the same, but dealing with pure water, why take the chance!
I put edge marks inside kinda hard to see but with flashlight it works

You can install a separate tube on outside to get your marks. Water seeks its own level. Drill side of brute put bulkhead in and with few elbows and clear tubing and you then can mark the tubing. There is a name for this contraption but can't think of it now.
