Salinity Level

with a hydrometer the specific gravity would be 1.020 - 1.023, i think the salinity = 27 to 30 parts per thousand but fish only will survive with varied levels, to run your tank at 1.015 is fine temporarily, and if you neglect FW top ups it could climb to above 1.035 and the fish probably wont show any signs of stress
 
1.025 I believe is what most average people keep theirs at. I keep mine at about 1.023 I just like it there and tank seems to be doing great! HTH
 
Salinity is often times measured via SG, but they are tow different things. Most LFS keep SG at around 1.019. This helps keep parasites at bay and saves them $$ on salt. FO tanks at home are fine around 1.019-1.021, reef tanks should be kept at a SG of 1.023-1.025.
