I have all sorts of tracks in my sand. Its rather interesting to watch because they only move across the sand at night. Durring the day my sand sifting goby evens out the sand, and at night the track it all up again.

Different snails behave differently. While most of my snails are on the rocks/glass, a few of them take the shortcut across the sand, but only rarely during the day. If one is in the sand, make sure it isn't upside down. Some species can right themselves, some can't. Not the best evolutionary design, but hey, it's a snail.
