sponge buds on rock

i recently purchased a rock with a dozen or so sponge buds or that was what i was told. if they r what is the probabiltity of them turning into a sponge and what is the time frame.

p.s. the rock was pulled out of the tank

I had heard that you are never to let sponges come in contact with air. They are one of the few things that you are supposed to keep submerged constantly.
 
i'm with electrikat, always been informed to never let them absorb air. However I am sure that this depends on the length of exposure.
FWIW [not saying you are wrong] but I thought I had a couple sponges on some of my lr, they turned out be be sea squirts!
 
i have a fiji rock that has started to grow a white tube sponge its now about 1 1/2 long ! growing great ! and i know that rock had to be out of water at least a week due to shipping ! but if ya buy a large sponge yes keep it in water at all times :)
