starfish enigma

A couple of weeks ago I bought a starfish, which I thought was a sand sifter. Now the strangest thing happend. Today half of his leg came off and it is still moving, the starfish is alive as well. I have seen a starfish regenerate a leg, but I have never seen a leg regenerate a starfish. Does anybody know anything about this? I attached a photo of it.

Many starfish reproduce by dropping legs, then the leg grws into a starfish, however, I thought some part of the disc had to be left on the leg. I am uncertain if the tip of a leg will grow into another starfish, but it is certainly possible.

Now the starfish has three detached legs. The detached legs are moving on the glace as well as the starfish.

Well, I'm no starfish expert, but this doesn't sound good, typically when starfish start dropping legs willy nilly, the end is near
