switching from HOB to sump

I have a friend that got a used set up not long ago and has been running the same HOB filter as the previous owner. Now he has a sump he is wanting to set up. He got bio balls to go with it. I suggested LR rubble. I am thinking if it is like FW he can run both for a couple of weeks so the sump can build up good bacteria and the phase out the HOB.

Sounds like a plan to me. I dont see anything wrong with it. He could also keep the filter going and if he ever gets a QT going he can switch it over to that.

That won't work the dreaded addiction is spreading his sister is setting up a SW 29 gallon and I believe the HOB filter will be going on that tank. He has MTS 8 1 SW and 7 FW tanks and he blames me so I figure when she gets another tank or 2 she can blame him. I had nothing to do with it I just gave him 2 FW tanks the rest is his own doing.
