Hey, I put a raw shrimp in my tank about a week ago to start/speed up the cycling process and now I'm starting to see a thin film of algae on the glass and the powerhead......what exactly is this? or what is it called?

If it is brown then you are seeing the start of the diatom bloom. Check your parameters now and see where you stand. Watch until the parms get back to zero. If you've had a good ammo spike remove the remaining shrimp and complete the cycle.

Good luck!

i havent tested any parameters but what reading would indicate a good ammonia spike?? (ill test when i get home from work :D )

Anything above 0 is a spike but I'd expect it to top out between .5-1.5ppm's. Then you'll have a nitrite spike.

just did some tests.....

Temp: 78.1 F
SG: 1.025
pH: 8.2
Ammonia: .25ppm

would you take the shrimp out yet or not??

Just a question, since it's on the same subject, nearly the same question ... what if the filmy algae like stuff is white? What would that be. It is where the shrimp is at?
