Not really, unless you are "blowing" your fish and what not around the tank aimlessly. If you have too much current you should be able to cut back on the output of the filter. Most have some sort of flow control on them.
I think you should be OK. I now have 2 600
GPH pumps going in my 125, plus 3 powerheads, and a mechanical filter that filters around 400
GPH, and I got a nice current going through the tank.
