I've been getting into some of the easier corals and I was curious as to how you can tell if an area of the tank has low, moderate or high flow. Also, are there any specific areas in the tank where you should place the powerheads?

Only way I can tell is watching them move in the flow. You can tell if they are getting blasted or no flow by watching them. I would make sure one powerhead is pointed upwards for surface aggitation. This will help with gas exchange and help to elavate your PH.

if you place the powerheads in the back corners and point them at a spot on the front glass in the middle aout two inches from the top of the water line, you'll get good movement, no blowing substrate and a good rolling action of the surface.
