Wet/Dry Trickle Filter or Refugium?

So, I'm wondering if there's any real data, or if it's just a preference. Which should I use for my 125Gal tank...a wet/dry trickle filter with bioballs+skimmer/heater, or a refugium w/ skimmer + heater + LS + plants(macroalgaes), etc? Also, if a refugium is best, what all should I have in it? Is what I listed enough? TIA for any and all facts/opinions/input!
