What does lighting exactly do?

What does lighting exatly do for coral? I understand photosysthesis is consumed by zooanthellea. But is coral with less lighting requirements why do sps and lps need so much more? Bc if one can makr what they need with less light why cant sps use the same light? & if the light is making some type of algea to feed with a strong like could u use a less intense light and add what the coral makes and consumes?

The algae makes what the SPS consumes and it takes a lot of light to do it. It's kinda like a human trying to make do with less oxygen. We need what we need to survive. It's the same with photosynthetic corals.
