What the heck is on my candy cane?

I originally though this was bleaching, but don't think so. Coral appears happy and has developed new growth, but not sure. Soft and spongy with strings. Please advise!!!

It's a sponge. I'd try and pull as much off as you can or it might irritate the coral tissue. (And blow off that cyano while you're at it!)
