why do puffers puff?

I have two puffers and have noticed them puffing up lately. nothing new has happened . maybe they have been doing this all along and I just now noticed them.

Normally puffing is a result of being stressed. Its used as a defensive posture. You say puffers but I only see one listed in your signature. Has your stock list changed? Is there anyone in the tank picking on the puffers? What type of puffers do you have?

Usually you dont house puffers together. They might be aggressive towards each other. That could be the reason of the puffing.
