Mine varies its length depending on the intensity of the light source coupled with flow. I have some octocorals of the same type that vary from 2" long to 12" long...same coral.

I thought it maybe the light as bulbs do need a change, also i want to frag it do i simply take a scalpel to the bottom of a branch and sew onto a rock or any better methods?

Using a rubber band to keep softies on a rock/plug works well. Takes about a week until you can remove the rubber band.
