I kept my first 10 gallon guppy tank when I was 8 years old (Of course mom was elected to perform the water changes, but i was a pretty dang good glass scrubber with that magnetic algae scrubber we had).

11 years later
I've been keeping and caring for fish for over 11 years now. I'm 19 years old and I know what you're thinking. (It's his parents tank) :ROFLMAO:

Well actually everything in this tank including the tank itself and the staff it sits on was purchased by my chore money when I was younger, and my job money now. I live in my parents house so I'm able to invest money into this passion and still put myself through college as a Finance Major.

Now that you know everything about me.....

TANK SPECS:
140 gallon glass tank(must have been custom built?):ermm:
Tank dimensions:60x18x30

EQUIPTMENT:
Lighting: 2x Kessil a150 Sky Blue
Powerhead: 1x Vortech Mp40 (+) 1x Vortech Mp10
Skimmer: Reef Octopus HOB Skimmer
UV sterilizer: Coralife turbo twist 18w (Only use it in the summer sometimes)
Temp gauge: AZoo Micro Temp Controller
Heater: Eheim Jager 300w

ROCK and SAND:
92lbs of live rock
1 inch sand bed

FISH:
1 Hippo blue tang
2 Yellow tangs
2 Ocellaris clowns
1 True Percula Clown
2 Blue Green Chromis (There was a school of 9)
1 Mandarin Goby
(HERE ME OUT) The blue tang was a friends who had it in a 400 gallon for 2 years. PROBLEM: He bought it from a Petco. So I'm guessing the Tang is stunted? He hasn't grown in all this time.... eats like a pig...???

CORALS:
1 Purple Hammer Coral (42 heads)
1 Green Frogspawn (4 Heads)
1 Orange Scolymia (He lost all his color but is regaining the orange slowly)
1 Purple and Green Acan (20 Heads)
3 Metallic Green Trumpets (114 Heads)
3 Mettalic GSP Colonies (Lost count)
24 Assorted Mushrooms (24 Shrooms)
1 Tiny Puls Xenia
5 Devils hand Leathers
3 Zoanthid Small Colonies

FOOD:
I feed 3 small meals a day for the fish and i spot feed the corals twice a week
New Life Spectrum pellets for the fish.
PE Mysis and Oyster Feast for the Corals.
The Mandarin eats his Tigger Pods which I dose every other month.

The tank has been setup for one year now. I started my first reef tank 3 years ago in a 28 gallon. Not long after it was upgraded to a 75 gallon. I kept the 75 for over a year and had a great tank, but bigger is always better... Right??
lool:D

NEW ADDITIONS:
So I'm wanting to add another Kessil a150. I want some more blue in the tank. To tell the truth. I want the same look of some of those almost purple lights that make every coral in the tank pop out. WOULD A KESSIL A150 20K DO THE JOB? ANY BETTER SUGGESTION? As far as budget goes I'm not looking to drop $500 on a new lighting system at the moment. I just spent the money on a couple of new corals which will get here Wed 18th. But I'm willing to drop around $300.

Some Pics

If anyone can give me some suggestions on the lighting that would be great!:thanks:

UPDATE: Getting paid Friday. Looking to drop anywhere from $300-$600 on some good lights. Should I keep the Kessils on the far sides side and add an aquailumintaion hydra for the center? or just go with 2 AI Hydras?

Hey Zachary, welcome to the site. Like the tank pics. I have found Reef Brite LEDs really make the coral colors pop like you suggest. I am running one on my 90g in conjunction with a Tek T5 with 2 actinic plus and 2 lagoon blue bulbs.

I'd add a kessil 350 in the middle :). With the 150s on the side. I think any way you go with the lights you mentioned you'd be fine as well though. I'm just a big kessil advocate lol

Thanks for the advice SeanMonster! I looked at the website and looked up some videos on youtube. That seems to be the coloration I've been looking for!

bribo12- So am I! I am a huge Kessil fan! The only reason I was curious about the AI Hydra was because of my need for a more blue look instead of whitish/blue. I know some people love the white look but I'm just one of those that likes a nice purple/blue look that makes the corals pop. Would the Kessil 350 tuna be a good choice? I also heard you can change the brightness or adjust something on the 350's??

Thanks for the welcome by the way. Seems like a great site to get some more info:D

OR..... I can get the new Aqua Illumination 52 bulb fixture.. Would one be enough to light the tank?

Very nice looking system. I'm a big fan of Kessil lighting but I'm surprised how well your corals look with just the two 150s. I have the larger 360s on a 220g tank and a single 150 over a 29g tank. You could add one of their deep blue 150s to get the desired color you want but I can tell you from experience that the change will not look balanced.

I love the Kessils too! Would I be better off doing away with the 150's and getting some 360's? Or keeping the 150's and adding another 150 deep blue OR adding 1 hydra 26 or 52?

I'm also concerned about my water flow too now. i=I have the Mp40 and Mp10. thinking i need to get another mp40 possibly... Thanks for your advice! I don't want it to look too unnatural. but I do like the tanks where the reds, greens, and oranges pop.

What intensity do you have the MP's running at? For a tank that large I would most likely think you'd need 2 MP40's. I currently have 2 MP40's toned way back on my 55 reef. Most likely adding another MP40 would do the system some great justice and you can just move the MP10, maybe even to the back wall or something to support the flow through the system.
The setting can also have a huge impact on the amount of flow going through the tank. What setting are they running on?

I see Ecotech has released the Quiet Drive version of their Vortechs. Talked with the equipment guy at my LFS and he said the noise reduction claims of 90% are true. They just installed one on a client's tank. I guess you can just buy the driver (dry side) for about $150. I'm looking at it for my 90 gal.

I have a MP60 on my 180 gal and an MP40 on my 90. Gotta tell you the 40 is noticeably louder. I have both on the reef crest setting and have verified that the 40 is aligned properly as I learned alignment definitely contributes to noise.

No comments on the lighting huh? I guess I don't need the new lighting? That's fine with me haha. Save the cash. I ordered some Ultra Acans and a Favia. The favor should be here tomorrow and the acans will arrive Monday. I'm planning on growing some cans and maybe fragging and selling some online. Is this a good side business?

So the 40's are louder than the 60'? Interesting.. Then should i be inclined to get a 60?
