I think your snail plan you mentioned would work, once the tank was infested. You'd had to have alot of the smaller snails like pond and ramshorn to have enough waste produced to keep the tank cycled. I had no crabs in my crab tank for a while and the MTS in there kept it cycled..but there's alot of them.
 
Ya. But the minute that thing is cycled... Elvis is going in!!! His fins look better... But he needs to be isolated for treatment more then anything.
 
mystery snails dont reproduce in the aquarium or that's what someone told me

They don't breed like crazy the way snails that ride in on your plants do. Those snails are asexual, each one pumps out eggs. The mystery/apple snails have a gender, and if you have a male and female you should end up with egg clutches. They are easy to control, however, because they lay them above the water line. They won't even hatch if they aren't in a really moist spot..but if you don't want the babies you just wipe the eggs away :)
