i havew a 5 gallon tank sitting around and i was wondering if i could keep a betta in it?
would i need a hood?
i already have a air pump.
but what kind of filter would u recommend?

a sponge filter would be fine.. and you wouldnt nessiasarly need a hood but regulating light is still a good idea like with a lamp near by..

I think a betta is one of the few things appropriate for a 5gal, so yes, it sounds like a good idea. Sponge filter would be all you need, but considering how little room is already present in the tank I'd hate to take up a good chunk of it with a sponge, so what I have on my 5gal is a Penguin mini. Does a very nice job.

You can very inexpensively get a glass top for this tank and then use a small strip light, or even use a gooseneck lamp over the tank for light.
