5 kuhli loaches with only a sponge filter

Hi,
I'm coming from ponds, so while I know a lot about fish, my knowledge on tropical fish is smaller.
My question would be, Would it be possible to hold 5 kuhli loaches in a 12 gallon planted aquarium with only a large sponge filter, or would that not be enough filtration? Assuming I do gravel vac/cleaning once a week.

That would be fine. Is the sponge filter come with Beneficial bacteria or is it a new filter?

Oh, is it for the start of a new tank, so a long term situation, or temporary (QT) while awaiting a new tank build?

Should be fine with proper weekly water change's.
