the female is not as colorful. Appears brown/grayish silver.

And the dorsal fin of the female is shorter and rounded (semi-circle shape)
compared to the male which is longer and pointy (triangle shape)

So say I got rid of the balas would I be able to add a redtail shark...

Absolutely not! Having had a shark, I can tell you that they do not do well in anything smaller than a 75 gallon tank. I rehomed mine to someone with 125 gallon tank. As he matured, so did his aggression level. He ate all my danios and became mean to the larger fish in the tank.

And as mentioned earlier in the thread, your pleco will have to be rehomed as well. The tank is not large enough for his adult needs.
