Actually (and come of you may not want to hear this coz it involves dead fish...) I had the opprtunity to dissect an Ancistrus species recently and see exactly how the intestine is positioned. It is directly under the ventral skin, right between the pelvic and pectoral girdles. The wildest thing is that the whole intestine really does resemble a spirally plate inside the fish. It can be uncoiled, but generally sticks together quite solidly, unlike human intestines.

That picture, and Lori's picture which is similar, are really good illustrations of the anatomy, as the skin and scales of the babies are quite transparent--you can see the organs and bones through the skin.
