Hello

I have a 6.6 gal tank at work. I was out for about 2.5 weeks when I had meningitis. One of my coworkers was feeding the fish while i was out. I returned Monday to find my tank in pretty bad shape, low water level, LOTS of algae of all kinds, mostly green spot algae and green hair algae.

I did a 50% H2O change on monday when I got back to work.

Will a blackout work to get rid of it?

How long for the blackout?

A blackout may help. Generally you'll want to go at least 3-5 days. Make sure that the tank is completely wrapped so that no light can get in.

How were the levels? Normally people overfeed fish when they don't know what their doing. In such a small tank I wouldn't be surprised if the nitrAtes weren't sky high. I'd clean the tank a well as you can, do a large PWC, then a 3 day blackout, another large PWC and go from there.

Algae is such a pain because once it gets established it can be very difficult to rid the tank of it.
