annoying danio

So I have this Danio. Not sure what kind he is (he looks like a rainbow trout kinda). He's lived with my Betta, Boris, for a long time...6 months at least. The reason he lives with Boris is because I can't trust him with my guppies. I've had Bassboat (that's his name) for at *least* 2 years, the longest I've ever had a fish. He and Boris got a long great, but today I looked at him and half of his tail was gone. Boris looked very guilty, but proud. So I moved Bassboat in with my guppies because it's the only other cycled tank I thought he'd do ok in. INSTANTLY he started harassing my guppies.

So I guess Boris is going to be cycling my 29 all by his lonesome. It's had water in it for a few weeks, I put a filter on it yesterday, so hopefully it's slightly decent. But Boris is very hardy, so I suppose he's gonna do ok.

Why can't he just get along with the guppies?!

I have heard from several people who tell me that Danios can be aggressive. Others tell me that these people are crazy and Danios are the most non-aggressive fish there is.

From my experience, I can tell you that I have never had any problems with Zebra Danios. I have 5 in one tank and 6 in another. All the tanks are community tanks.

One thing is certain, however, Danios are schooling fish. You should really keep them together in a school of 5 or more. Maybe this is why he seems aggressive. Perhaps he is just playing. I would buy him some Danio tankmates (preferably of the same species he is) and see if that corrects the problem.

I bought him as a longfin, but he doesn't have long fins. I thought they just needed to grow. Well, he's grown but his fins weren't. I got him back in the day when I didn't know anything, and frankly I'm amazed he's still around. He had seemed happy with just Boris, but I guess Boris decided to be a jerk lately. He'll probably go back in with Boris when I start setting up that tank to be a cichlid tank.

Mine were great, they just chased each other around.
