i read that you can just cut the rhyozome so you can have more than one plant but how many leaves will it need to live? im planning on attaching it on a piece of wood to make it look like a tree.

Hello all...

If you're referring to the barteri variety of the plant, then you need to look for the thicker roots or "rhizome". The plant you get from the LFS is usually attached to a piece of driftwood. If you by it online from a plant company, then it can come in a small plastic pot in a wool covering. Make sure you remove all the wool and rinse the plant thoroughly before putting it in your tank.

If you want to separate the plant, then divide the rhizome into clumps of three or four leaves and attach them to pieces of driftwood or lava rock with long strands of black sewing thread.

I normally don't divide the plant, but that's my preference.
