Aquarium salt

Is it a good idea to add aquarium salt or not. If yes, how often, and do you dissolve it before it goes into the tank or just dump it in.

I've seen conflicting opinions on using salt, am confused. :?
 
Some fish do not tolerate salt very well, like (I believe, but don't quote me on this) tetras and cories. I'm also sure that snails or live plants don't like it very much either.

I use salt as part of my mix for my African cichilds. I actually have a tank set aside to mix the salt in the water before I do a water change. I usually agitate it in the tank for at least 3 hours to make sure it's fully dissolved.
