unless its SW, im pretty sure the hermit crabs you are thinking of don't belong in water. They need a 10gal tank and a water supply, but not submersed in water like a fish tank
 
They are quite popular. We have two land hermit crabs in our office. They require high humidity, warm air temp, a fresh and saltwater supply and a weekly bath (to keep their gills moist: gills are different from that of fish)

They seem to be active mostly at night. They pretty much sleep all day but every morning the tank has been rearranged and occasionally they will switch shells, which is the highlight of the morning.
