How long does bb take to die off in a canister filter when theres a blackout? I ask this because thats my current situation and the estimated period without power is 5 hours

It takes up to a month without food for bacteria to die.
Without oxygen, I'm not aware of any concrete time frame for the bacteria to survive.

You will be perfectly fine for a couple days at least though.

Up to a day off at least has been fine for me. Having it off for a week has caused it to go non-aerobic and pulled apart for cleaning.

So I guess somewhere around past several days off must start to be an issue.

During storm Sandy, our power went off for 3 days, 15 African cichlids in a 55 gallon with two canister filters sat still for that time, power came back on and no problems.

That's great info! Starts to narrow down on timing when problems start.
