I agree, both fish in and fishless cycles can be done properly and safely if the person knows how to do it and why they're doing it.
And with fish in cycles, water changes are crucial.
 
Can you get your hands on some already used filter media from a different tank? If you can, a fish in cycles would be way easier because you would already have some of the bacteria that is needed to cycle it. It would probably save you some water changes.
Oh and make sure you dechlorinate the water before you put it back in his tank. If it's spring or distilled water you don't need to, but if it is tap water, I recommend using Seachem Prime because it removes chlorine, chloramine, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and heavy metals.
