I don't think it really matters. I will be buying one in a few weeks (once my tank is cycled) and I've seen active healthy ones in both the clear & blue water cups. The only thing tough is to see the actual color of the fish in the blue ones.

Out of curiousity, what is the that blue water in the cup in which the LFS sells a a betta?

Its just dye so they don't see the fish next to them while shipping. Its to keep the stress level of the fish down. Once they are at the store and the employees change their water the blue lightens

I read that the blue is to reduce stress from lower water temps. Cannot heat such a small amount of water!

Perhaps both!

It's usually malachite green/formalin. It's basically the same stuff in Rid-Ich, QuICK Cure, etc. It prevents fungal and some parasitic issues.
