A friend of mine was guilty of keeping a betta fish in a 1 gallon or so bowl without a filter, heater, or as many water changes as needed. I've been trying to tell her the proper way of caring for one but she instead asked if I wanted to take him and make him better. I've been slowly acclimating him to one of my tanks since last night. He is moving around more but whenever he tries to swim down his rear end wants to keep floating. So he ends back up on top. What can it be and how do I fix it?

He probably has swim bladder disease. Try feed him a little bit of frozen daphina or blanched, deshelled pea. Fast for 2-3 days and hope for the best.

Thanks Scotty. I thought it was swim bladder. I hope the peas will do it. Really really don't want to tell my friend her fish died in my care.

Yeah, my family almost didn't let me get a new betta. My last two died after I brought them home :hide:
