My betta is in a 5.5g and I'm still deciding some tank mates for him

Really depends on the betta, i've kept mine with harlequin rasboras, neons, adfs, shrimp, bn plec, all with no problem (not all at the same time!)

Definitely depends on the individual fish. My betta lives with 6 green rasboras and red rili shrimp, doesn't bother either.
