I have a floating log in my tank, and many time he lives in there. However for like the past hour he has been on the outside just looking in not doing anything. This this normal or am I looking at the situation too hard ?

I think you're just overreacting a little lol. Gouramis do weird things, my Opale has his moments of brainlessness so I wouldn't be too concerned.
