I was considering getting a figure eight puffer and setting it up in a 20 gallon made to look like a marine tank, with some fake coral, sand, and lava rock. Is a 20 gallon going to be big enough for a figure eight puffer on his own? Is there anything I could get to tackle algae for such a tank, that the puffer will not eat and looks kinda mariney? Any suggestions appreciated, especially about whether the tanks big enough or not.

Yes, should be fine.

Unless you found some huge snails, I doubt it. They love shellfish.

I don't have firsthand puffer experience, but it sounds like your setup is good. :)

Sorry I can't help more...

hey require a tank size o 30 gallons according to liveaquaria.com, but your 20 will be fine, rember they get aggressive

make sure you didnt add real sea shells and coral...they'll mess with water ph

The nice thing about brackish tanks is that salt will already increase your pH and buffer it. So you can add shells and such and it won't affect the pH.
