I all of a sudden have a build up of brown dirt all over rocks and silk and plastic plants in tank. It is a mess. Anyone know what this is?

Thanks

Diatoms. Its a brown algae that tends to grow in new tanks.

How long has your tank been set up?
What are your parameters?
How long do you run your lights daily?

Tank has been set up about 5 weeks. Parameters? Light is on all day (flourescent tank light), I turn it off for 8 hours at night.

Thanks

Oh, last I tested (about 2 days ago) all levels where normal, nitrate was a bit high so I changed 25 percent of the water. I did accidently leave the light on all night 2 days ago. Could one night do it? Should I not leave the light on all day, just let natural light in?

Thanks

But a timer! Takes all of the responsibilities of having to turn the lights on and off everyday. Much more convenient.

16 hours is too much light. 8 is more than enough.
