I bought a piece a malaysian driftwood recently for my tank and noticed on day two of soaking it that there is a small section of it that is charred. It's not to the point where it's brittle, like charcoal, but a small part of it is blackend.

Is this going to be harmful in my tank?

No, it won't. one of the things some people use in their filters is activated carbon, essentially charcoal. It won't cause any problems.
