Caves=happy checkerboards??????

I have been told by many and have read in a few books that checkerboard cichlids need caves and rocks I was wondering if this is true. I was also wondering if that would be ok with plant lovers like Mylossoma duriventre?

iv come to the conclusion that not everyone noes what a checkerboard cichlid is so im including the genus : crenicara filamentosa

Planted tanks are recommended and caves/rocks/hiding places are always good for any cichlid.
