So I was reading the "why is this still here post" and saw gone fishin's post about removing the charcoal in the filter because it removes the nutrients that are being added. Would something like chemi-pure be removing the benefits of adding seachem ecocomplete, and iron ferts?

if it does , what would be a good substitute for a carbon based filter?

I've used Chemi-pure before with decent results. I didn't find that it removed many of my nutrients (a little NO3 and PO4, but not considerable amounts). I would however recommend Seachem's Purigen over any other chemical media out there. It works amazingly well, does a great job polishing your water, and is easily rechargeable. You'll need to get some fine filter bags to put it in, but it's great stuff :)
