I work at petco and we sell mixed african cichlids. I know they get up to 8" but we just got a shipment today and they're all under 2. Realistically speaking can I house some and what would be the time frame for moving them to a bigger tank? I don't know much about their rate of growth.

Depends... but most likely not. If they're shell dwelling cichlids from lake tanganyika, then yes. There are also a couple other tangs, but I'm not very familiar with them. As far as fish in the 'mixed african cichlids' tanks, which are typically a mix of mbuna, peacocks, and haps, no. Definitely not.

If you wanted to go dwarf cichlids, I'd only put one pair of rams in. Shell dwellers would be your best bet, like Rookie was saying.
