No, you can keep them in anything that will provide a place to hide that is fairly dark. A cave would do the trick. They love to sit inside the cave all day.
 
I researching I've found that clown plecos eat wood. You may be right they might be ok without wood. But all the info suggests that wood is definitely beneficial

is mopani wood ok? its the only thing i could find, seems like some people say its to hard.
