Does a clown pleco absolutely need wood in a. Aquarium?

No, you can keep them in anything that will provide a place to hide that is fairly dark. A cave would do the trick. They love to sit inside the cave all day.

I researching I've found that clown plecos eat wood. You may be right they might be ok without wood. But all the info suggests that wood is definitely beneficial

Yes, clown pleco's are a species of Panaque, and those all require wood in their diet. They have bacteria in their gut that helps them digest food. W/out wood the bacteria will die, and then so will the fish.

is mopani wood ok? its the only thing i could find, seems like some people say its to hard.

It will be fine with time it will start softening. I have it in all of my tanks.
