Is it necessary, or will it not make a difference when adding such a small amount?

I probably would, but if you've got the water standing a couple of days before topping, the chlorine would've gone anyway.

Treating Top-off Water

Hello ab...

You should treat any replacement water that will go into the tank. I keep a 5 gallon bucket handy that has treated water in it. I just fill a plastic pitcher and pour the new water directly into the tank.

Pretty simple.

I also always add dechlorinator to top off water. I have dedicated water jugs that I just add dechlorinator to everytime I fill them.
