Anyone know where driftwood comes from? Obviously, it's meant to sink, which means it is something other than saturated wood one would find in a stream. Is it possible to treat wood parts or roots to make attractive aquarium pieces? It seems awful expensive to buy retail. Africaroot?

Driftwood is just any old wood that is waterlogged (or not) & drifts around in a stream/ocean.

You can collect your own .... generally any hardwood species that had been seasoned for a couple of years will work. <Make sure you collect from unpolluted area! Pesticides & Herbicides & other pollutants can wreck havoc in your tank.> You would have to clean, disinfect & water log any collected pieces. Search "DIY Driftwood" & you should find quite a few threads on the subject.
