It may sound stupid but does anyone shut off their filtration system when they feed their fish?

Is that something that is normally done ?

It's not stupid and there are people that do turn their filters off when feeding, especially for slower moving fish or when the filter is too strong to allow flakes to stay at the surface for surface feeders. I don't turn mine off, but you certainly can

Yes, I turn mine off for the reasons Zimmanski mentioned. I think you'll find that quite a few people do this. Either or works fine. It's what works best for your tank. If the food is just being swished around and pushed to the bottom by a stronger filter, it's a good idea, I think, to turn it off for feeds.
