I've heard from people (this forum included) that you shouldn't change the filter media for your tank. I assume the reason behind that is that's where the beneficial bacteria grow and live.

If that's the reason, how does a Bio-Wheel impact that "rule". Isn't the idea of the Bio-Wheel that it will be the substrate for the beneficial bacteria to grow and live? Should I be changing my filter if I have a Bio-Wheel?

Thanks!

Biomedia should be rinsed in tank water, other medias should be cleaned or changed depending on the exact media.

Don't change your mechanical or biological filter media unless it's absolutely falling apart, even with the biowheel. Why lose any bacteria when you don't have to?
