I have a 55 gallon with a fluval c4 hob. I have 2 of the purigen pouches in place of carbon but I feel like there's too much water flow around them, they aren't in there that tight in the chamber. All my water parameters are good, I don't let nitrates climb above 15ppm. I also recently added a 660gph powerhead to improve circulation if that matters.

Maybe take some new car sponges or some type of sponge and pack it around.

Also, are the stock fluval mechanical pads decent? I've never tried making my own. My goal is next to crystal clear water. Would adding a sponge to the intake help or that mainly aid biological filtration?

I have C4s and I use Matrix in the carbon box and the drip box . I also use sponge prefilters on all my HOB intakes. Makes the filter material in the filter last for a long time and helps keep them from becoming Nitrate factories.
