And am wondering if I use my older media from my HOB do I need to worry about anything OR, would it be better to run both the canister and the HOB?
firing up a new canister filter this weekend !

It's your choice either put the old media in your new filter or run both. if you decide to run both make sure you run your Hob for at least 4 weeks.

Personally, when i upgraded to a canister i left both of my emperor 400s on for a while then after a couple weeks i removed one of the emperors for a different tank and now have both a canister and a hob on my display tank.

I'd leave the Hob on unless you need them on another tank. Can never have to much filtration! !
