Do freshwater clams need time to adjust to the water chemistry after eating them. I would assume not because only there shells are exposed

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. If you've eaten something I doubt it needs much time to adjust to anything...

If you've added a new clam to your tank then it probably will need time to adjust, sadly their survival rates in aquaria are terribly low as most people are unable to provide sufficient food for them.

Clams are filter feeders. They eat free floating algae and such out of the water column. This is why most people can't sustain them long term.
