Do I need the glass lids on my tank?
the calcium? buildup on them is restricting the light.
Can I just take them off?
My tank is in the shed out the back.
It had a hood on it as well.

If you have a hood then you don't need the glass lid.
You should clean the lids every week or so to maximize the light entry into the tank.

I've had to buy a glass lid as i have ordered a luminaire, i think you only need them if you have a luminaire.

well most hoods/lights come with instructions advising it should sit on a cover to prevent contact with water.

electricity and water not a good mix

I would have to agree, caution must be excersised with hoods and no glass. Also if the tank is in a shed, wouldn't leaving the glass on protect the tank from bugs and the like getting into the tank? Cleaning with vinegar and a razor blade if necessary isn't too difficult.
